Norway becomes 1st country to ban FM radio broadcasting
Norway became the first country to ban FM radio broadcasting. The northern county of Nordland on 11 January 2017 stopped radio broadcasting using analogue frequencies.
● The primary reason behind banning FM radio broadcasting is government’s endeavour to offer a better radio service to the whole population.
● Compared to FM radio broadcasting, digital audio broadcasting offers a wider range of broadcasting options and greater sound quality.
● DAB allows for more channels on a given bandwidth, provides better reception and has significantly lower operating costs than traditional FM.
● At present, there are 22 national digital stations in Norway including 20 smaller ones. However, the FM spectrum has room for a maximum of only five national stations.
● As per an estimate of Norway’s culture ministry, the switch over will save 25 million US dollars a year.
नार्वे एफएम रेडियो बंद करने वाला विश्व का पहला देश बना. नार्वे 11 जनवरी 2017 से अपना एफएम रेडियो नेटवर्क बंद कर रहा है. अपने डिजिटल रेडियो को सपोर्ट करने के लिए उसने ऐसा किया.
● नॉर्वे एफएम की बजाय डिजिटल ऑडियो ब्रॉडकास्टिंग (डैब) तकनीक को अपनाने जा रहा है. नार्वे के अनुसार डिजिटल रेडियो की साउंड क्वालिटी एफएम से ज्यादा अच्छी है और इसकी लागत भी 8 गुना कम है.
● स्विट्जरलैंड ने एफएम रेडियो को खत्म करने के लिए वर्ष 2020 की समयसीमा तय की है. भारत में एफएम रेडियो की शुरूआत चेन्नई में वर्ष 1977 में हुई थी. यहां सरकार एफएम कंपनियों से एक ही बार प्रवेश शुल्क लेती है.
● डिजिटल ऑडियो ब्रॉडकास्टिंग (डैब) तकनीक के बारे में:
● डिजिटल ऑडियो ब्रॉडकास्टिंग एक ऐसी तकनीक हैं जिसमें एनालॉग ऑडियो सिग्नल को डिजिटल सिग्नल में बदला जाता है. इसे ऑडियो की अब तक की बहुत ही अच्छा तकनीक माना जाता है.
● इस तकनीक को अपनाने से 2.35 करोड़ डॉलर की सलाना बचत होगी. नार्वे में 20 फीसदी निजी कारें ऐसी है जिनमें पहले से ही डैब रेडियो सिस्टम मौजूद है.
● एफएम को डैब रेडियो सिस्टम में बदलने में 174.70 डॉलर की लागत आती है.
