On 5 May 2016 IPS Officer Kumar Rajesh Chandra got appointed as the Chief of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.
Chandra has been appointed in place of IPS officer G S Malhi. 
•    Chandra is a 1985 batch IPS officer of Bihar cadre.
•    He is currently working as Additional Director General (Modernisation), Bihar Police.
•    BCAS acts as regulatory authority for civil aviation security.
•    In January 1978, the BCAS was established as a department of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. 
•    BCAS became an independent agency of the Ministry of Civil Aviation on 1 April 1987 after the 1985 bombing of Air India Flight 182.
•    The main responsibility of BCAS is to lay down standards and measures in respect of security of civil flights at international and domestic airports in India.

Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba, got appointed as the next Chief of the Naval Staff on 5 May 2016. 
•    He will assume the charge on 31 May 2016 as the 23rd chief of Indian Navy .
•    He will succeed present Navy Chief Admiral Robin K. Dhowan.
•    He was commissioned into the Executive Branch of Indian Navy on 1 January 1978.
•    His sea Command includes commanding the minesweeper INS Kakinada, frigate INS Himgiri and Executive Officer of INS Viraat, the aircraft carrier.
•    Before FOC-in-C, Western Naval Command, he was FOC-in-C, Southern Naval Command, 
•    He was also the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff and Commandant, National Defence College.
•    He is a qualified specialist in navigation and direction course.
•    He attended the course at the Royal College of Defence Studies, UK.
He was Born on 17 July 1957,  and has been recipient of Param Vishist Seva Medal and Ati Vishist Seva Medal.

On 4 May 2016 President Pranab Mukherjee conferred the 15^th set of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) Niryat Shree and Niryat Bandhu Awards in New Delhi.
•    Reliance Industry was adjudged as the top foreign exchange earner and leading exporter of last 50 years.
•    TCS bagged the Gold Award in IT services. 
•    State Bank of India got the Gold award 
•    President also unveiled the brand new FIEO Logo representing growth, vibrancy, innovation and entrepreneurship.
•    It was set up in 1965 and completed 50 years .
•    The Federation recently moved to Niryat Bhawan, New Delhi.
•    It extended its arms to support the State Governments through formulation of Export Strategy and Export Policy.
•    The Trade Portal developed by FIEO has provided single window information on all facets of international trade for Indian Exim community.

Saina Nehwal, headed to the Olympics for third time.PV Sindhu on way to her maiden Games as well as K Srikanth in men’s singles, another first timer. 
•    Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa (No. 15) have made the grade for a second straight Olympics.
•    India is one of only eight countries in the world to qualify two entries in a category — women’s singles, with PV Sindhu (ranked No. 10) joining Saina Nehwal (ranked No. 8). 
•    Japanese Kento Momota’s suspension opens up men’s singles, but Srikanth will to upset the last Olympic outings of the two legends, Dan and Chong Wei, and title favourite Chen Long. 
•    Jwala-Ashwini, have done well at consecutive Commonwealth Games, but struggled to cross quarters in Super Series.

Ban Ki-moon has selected Mexican diplomat Patricia Espinosa as the executive secretary of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). 

•    She will replace the incumbent Christiana Figueres when her term ends in July 2016. 
•    Before this she was serving as Mexico’s ambassador to Germany Earlier she had served as Mexico’s representative at the UN in New York 
•    She used to work in the field of drug traffic, human rights, women promotion, social development and children’s rights. 
•    She will be implementing the Paris Agreement on Climate Change that was approved by 195 countries in December 2015 during UNFCCC’s COP 21 held in Paris, France.
•    The UNFCCC is an international environmental treaty negotiated at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 
•    It came into force in 1994. 
•    It has 196 countries and European Union (EU) as its members. 
•    It is the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol which was ratified by 192 of the UNFCCC Parties. 
•    The ultimate objective of both treaties is to stabilize greenhouse gas (GHGs) concentrations in the atmosphere.

On 2 May 2016 The Supreme Court of India appointed a three-member panel headed by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) RM Lodha to oversee the functions of the Medical Council of India. 
The panel consists of former CAG Vinod Rai and Dr SK Sareen.
•    The court appointed the panel after MCI has been accused of corrupt. 
•    A parliamentary committee report said that the MCI was repeatedly found short of fulfilling its mandated responsibilities, 
•    Medical graduates lacked competence in performing basic healthcare tasks. Instances of unethical practices continued to grow. The MCI was not able to spearhead any serious reforms in medical education.
•    Earlier, RM Lodha headed a three-member panel appointed by the top court to look into the 2013 betting scandal in the Indian Premier league (IPL) and the functioning of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) 
•    He also headed the committee appointed to sell assets of Pearls Agrotech Corporation Ltd (PACL) and refund 49 thousand crore rupees to the investors.

On 3 May 2016 Sameer Chadha was appointed as the partner and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KPMG's offshore arm in India.
Chadha joined KPMG Global Services (KGS) from Barclays Shared Services,
Chadha has 25 years of experience with leading organisations across the financial services and consumer goods sectors. 
•    He began his career with Nestle India.
•    Prior to working with Barclays, he held strategic leadership roles at firms such as Bank of America, First Source Solutions and Lehman Brothers.
•    He is a chartered accountant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University.
•    KPMG was established in India in September 1993 
•    KPMG India Pvt Ltd offers financial advisory services, business advisory services, tax and regulatory services and risk advisory services.

President Pranab Mukherjee on 3 May 2016 conferred National film awards for the year 2015 in various categories at the 63rd National Film Awards Function held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
•    The President also conferred 2015 Dada Saheb Phalke Award to Manoj Kumar.
•    Amitabh Bachchan received the Best Actor honour for his role of a hypochondriac father in Piku. While Kangana Ranaut received the Best Actress Award for Tanu Weds Manu Returns.

On 1 May 2016 Indian shooters bagged three gold medals and a bronze in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany.
•    The Indians won gold each in the men's 25m standard pistol and women's 50m rifle prone competitions. 
•    India’s Rituraj Singh won an individual gold medal in the men's 25m standard pistol competition 
•    Gaayathri Nithyanadam bagged a bronze in the women's 50m rifle prone competition.
•    Rituraj Singh, Shivam Shukla and Arjun Das walked away with the gold medal in the team event of the men's 25m standard pistol competition, shooting a total of 1661. 
•    France won the silver medal with 1659 points while Australia won the bronze with 1648 points.
•    Indian women won gold medal in the team event of the 50m rifle prone competition. 
•    Gaayathri Nithyanadam, Sonika and Ayushi Podder shot a total of 1846.6 to emerge winners. 
•    They were followed by France (1841.7) and Poland (1836.3) respectively.

An Indian American Sikh woman from California, Harmeet Kaur Dhillon, got elected in the Republican Party at the US national level.
She was elected as the newest national committee woman of the Republican National Committee on 1 May 2016.
Earlier she was the vice chairman of the California GOP. She is the first woman elected to this position in California Republican Party.
•    She was born in India, but raised in rural North Carolina after her Sikh parents moved to the US.
•    She is a nationally recognized trial lawyer, boardroom advisor and advocate for individual, corporate and institutional clients across numerous industries and walks of life.
