President of IndiaтАЩs message on anniversary of Independence Day of Indonesia

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has extended his greetings and felicitations to the Government and people of the Republic of Indonesia on the eve of 71st anniversary of their Independence Day (August 17, 2016). 
•    In a message to His Excellency Mr. Joko Widodo, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, the President has said, “On behalf of the Government, the people of India and on my own behalf, it is with great pleasure that I extend warm greetings and congratulations to the Government and the people of Indonesia on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of your Independence Day. 
•    Our two countries believe in “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity) and share warm and friendly relations which are rooted in our historical and cultural linkages. As the world’s two largest democracies and developing economies with young populations, we are making sincere efforts towards rapid economic development. The positive social and economic agenda of both our nations countries is being appreciated around the globe. 
•    The relations between our two countries have matured into a strategic partnership. The year 2015 witnessed exchanges high level visits that have contributed to the enhancement of our cooperation across the full spectrum of areas of our common interest. India is committed to further strengthen our partnership through the five – pronged initiative agreed by our two nations, which includes robust strategic engagement, defence and security cooperation, comprehensive economic partnership, cultural and people-to-people links and cooperation in responding to common challenges. The Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval for MoU between India and South Africa

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its ex-post facto approval for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and South Africa for cooperation in the field of Tourism. The MoU was signed on 08.07.2016. 
The main objectives of the MoU are: 
•    To expand bilateral cooperation in the tourism sector; 
•    To exchange information and data related to tourism ; 
•    To encourage cooperation between tourism stakeholders, including hotels and tour operators. 
•    To establish exchange programmes for cooperation in Human Resource Development; 
•    Investing in the tourism and hospitality sector; 
•    To encourage visits of Tour Operators/Media/ Opinion Makers and tourists from both countries for promotion of two way tourism; 
•    To exchange experiences in the areas of promotion, education, marketing, destination development and management; 
•    To participate in travel fairs/exhibitions in each other's country; and 
•    To promote safe, honourable and sustainable tourism.

Union Cabinet approves signing of Air Services Agreement between India and Laos

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval for signing of new Air Services Agreement (ASA) between India and Laos People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). 
•    The Agreement is expected to spur greater trade, investment, tourism and cultural exchange between the two countries bringing it in tune with the developments in the civil aviation sector. 
•    It will provide enabling environment for enhanced and seamless connectivity while providing commercial opportunities to the carriers of both the sides ensuring greater safety and security. 
•    Under the agreement, the designated airlines of the two countries shall have fair and equal opportunity to operate the agreed services on specified routes.
•    The routes and frequencies shall be decided subsequently. ASA is the basic legal framework for any air operation between the two countries.

Bangladesh and India have signed an agreement for the construction of coal fired power plant

India and Bangladesh on 12 July 2016 signed a landmark deal for the construction of Rampal Power Station, a 1320 megawatt coal fired power plant.
The Rampal Power Station is the biggest project under bilateral cooperation.
•    The Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Limited (BIFPCL), the joint venture enterprise, signed the deal with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
•    BHEL was chosen under an open international tender for constructing the super thermal plant at Bangladesh's southwestern Rampal near the Sundarbans.
•    India's Exim Bank will provide 1.49 billion US dollars for the project.
•    The project is scheduled to start generating power in 2019.
•    The Rampal Power Station is a proposed 1320 megawatt coal-fired power station at Rampal Upazila of Bagerhat District in Khulna, Bangladesh.
•    It is a joint partnership between India's state owned National Thermal Power Corporation and Bangladesh Power Development Board.
•    The project is also known as Maitree Super Thermal Power Project.
•    The proposed project will be constructed on an area of over 1834 acres of land.
•    It is situated 14 kilometres north of the world's largest mangrove forest Sundarbans, which is a UNESCO world heritage site.
•    The project will be Bangladesh’s largest power plant.

India Tanzania sign 5 bilateral pacts

India and Tanzania on 10 July 2016 inked five agreements to enhance the bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
These agreements were signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tanzania from 9 July to 10 July 2016. 
•    MoU on Cooperation in the field of water resource management and development between the two countries.
•    MoU on Visa waiver agreement for Diplomatic/Official passport holders between the two countries.
•    Agreement on Joint Action Plan (JAP) between National Small Industries Corporation of India (NSIC) and Small Industries Development Organization Tanzania (SIDO).
•    MoU for Establishment of Vocational Training Centre at Zanzibar.
•    LOC of 92 million US dollar for rehabilitation and improvement of water supply system in Zanzibar.
•    During the visit to Tanzania, Modi met Tanzania’s President John Pombe Joseph Magufuli. 
•    During the meet, the two leaders agreed to work closely, bilaterally, regionally and globally to combat the twin threats of terrorism and climate change.

India sign four pacts with South Africa

India and South Africa on 8 July 2016 announced Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and Programme in four areas of bilateral cooperation.
•    While the MoUs cover the information and communication technology (ICT), grass root innovation and tourism, the Programme of Cooperation will cover segments of arts and culture.
•    The MoUs and the Programme were announced after summit level talks between the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Jacob Zuma in Johannesburg, South Africa.
•    During the meeting, both the leaders discussed a wide range of bilateral and international issues including reform of the UN Security Council (UNSC).
•    Prime Mister Narendra Modi began his four-nation tour of African countries Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya on 7 July 2016.
•    South Africa is a country on the southernmost tip of the African continent, marked by several distinct ecosystems.

India and Mozambique have signed three MoU in areas of drug trafficking, pulse trading and sports.

India and Mozambique on 7 July 2016 signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in areas of drug trafficking, pulse trading and sports.
•    These MoUs were signed between two countries at Maputo, Mozambique during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mozambique. 
•    It will promote the production of Toor (Pigeon Peas) and other pulses in Mozambique to encourage trading of pulses.
•    It will also play an important role in augmenting domestic availability of pulses in India. 
•    The contract will be valid for five financial years 2020-21 and pulses under it will be imported by India either through G2G or private channels nominated by two countries.
•    MoU on cooperation in the field of youth affairs and sports. 
•    MoU on reduction of drug trafficking and psychotropic substances and related materials.

India, S Africa to deepen ties in defence, manufacturing sectors

India and South Africa agreed to deepen engagement in key areas of defence production, manufacturing, mining and minerals while vowing to cooperate "actively" in combating terrorism and dealing with issues at multilateral forums, ratcheting up their traditional ties.
•    After extensive talks with South African President Jacob Zuma, Prime Minister Narendra Modi projected India as an attractive destination for manufacturing of defence equipment and platforms and said both countries could join hands in not only meeting needs of each other but also to respond to regional and global demand.
•    During the meeting, Modi thanked President Zuma for South Africa's support to India's membership bid to the Nuclear Suppliers Group.
•    Ties between India and South Africa have been a story of strong advances and concrete achievements
•    Potential to ramp up cooperation in trade and investment, especially in areas of minerals and mining, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and information technology.

The Union Cabinet has approved MoU between UPSC and RCSC, Bhutan.

The Union Cabinet on 29 June 2016 approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Royal Civil Service Commission (RCSC), Bhutan.
•    The MoU will strengthen the existing relationship between RCSC and UPSC. It will facilitate sharing of experience and expertise of both the parties in the area of recruitment.
•    The draft MoU between UPSC and RCSC, Bhutan will be signed to develop institutionalized linkage between the Public Service Commission of both the countries, which share the common ideals.
•    The MoU covers the areas of cooperation that include
•    Sharing of experience and expertise in Civil Service matters such as recruitment and selection, exchange of resource persons and development of professional skills of the officers and staff of the parties through attachment and training programs
•    Sharing of expertise on use of Information Technology (IT) in examination processes, Computer Based Recruitment Tests and Examinations, sharing of experience in Single Window System for expeditious scrutiny and speedy disposal of cases, building merit based staffing system, etc.
•    Sharing of experience on the modalities adopted on audit of processes and procedures followed by various Government agencies in recruitment for posts under the delegated powers.

India, Uzbekistan to step up security cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a meeting with Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov during which the two leaders called for more security cooperation to further expand and strengthen bilateral relations.

•    During the meeting, the two leaders recalled old historical and cultural connections and discussed ways to further expand and strengthen relations. 
•    The Prime Minister, who is on a second visit to the country within a year, conveyed India’s decision to extend e-Tourist Visa to Uzbek nationals.
•    He also said India will organise a ‘Festival of India’ and an ‘Indian Trade Exhibition’ in Uzbekistan to mark 25 years of Uzbekistan’s independence and 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations with India. Both leaders noted that cooperation was growing in defence and an MoU on Cyber Security had been concluded. 
•    They called for more cooperation in security.
•    The Prime Minister also thanked President Karimov for support to India’s membership of SCO.
