on 30 April 2016 The Supreme Court of India decided to extend the deadline for keep out diesel cabs in National Capital Region (NCR). 
Earlier deadline was 1 April 2016, but it was extended for a month.
•    Extension was given so that private cab companies could switch to CNG vehicles by 1 May 2016.
•    Supreme Court allowed Delhi Police and Delhi Jal Board to buy and register the new diesel-run vehicles of 2000 cc engine capacity and above for transportation of under trial prisoners, arms and ammunition and supply of water.
•    SC Had stopped sale of diesel SUVs and luxury cars with more than 2000 cc engine capacity in 2015.
•    Later SC asked Delhi Police to pay 30 percent of the real value of the vehicle to be purchased by it as Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) or green cess as a pre-condition for their registration with the transport department.
•    SC, exempted Delhi Jal Board (DJB) from paying ECC on the ground that around 250 water tankers would be supplying water to the citizens of the city.
•    The court allowed the plea of police and allowed to register on payment of ECC.

On 28 April 2016 CM Naveen Patnaik inaugurated 100 piped water supply projects for rural areas.
The project was inaugurated on the occasion of Utkal Gaurab Madhusudan Das’ anniversary.  
He was the first graduate and advocate of Odisha.
In April 2016, the state government also announced that it will sink a tubewell in each of the 27711 areas spending around 195 crore rupees. 
• The 100 projects will benefit 172000 people in 107 villages across the state.
• In 2016, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) Township is experiencing a massive drinking water crisis. 
• Several tribal settlements around Byree area of Jajpur district are being provided with water tankers by private donors.
• In 2015, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) found that drinking water in adequate quantity was not supplied to people in 95 out of 106 urban areas of the state.

Maharashtra government has planned to develop Amravati, as a textiles city to promote this industry in cotton-growing areas of the Vidarbha region.
•    The Nandgaon industrial estate would be developed as "textile park" and Amravati would soon be recognised as the textiles city.
•    Raymond Ltd will extend all possible help to the state government in setting up the Apparel Park here with a full-fledged fashion designing facility.
•    Chairman and Managing Director of Raymond Ltd Gautam Hari Singhania will invest Rs 1,400 crore and the unit will provide job opportunities to about 8,000 persons.
•    The Nandgoan MIDC is spread across 200 hectares in Amravati .
•    Raymond will start production by March 31 next year
•    Raymond has a unit in Yavatmal and the cotton growers 
•    Maharashtra Industries Minister Subhash Desai appreciated the steps being taken by Raymond to revive the life of local farmers in the region

On 30 April 2016 Piyush Goyal launched National LED programme - Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) in Madhya Pradesh.
The scheme is being implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the Union Ministry of Power.
• Under this Programme, 3 crore LED Bulbs will be distributed in the next 6 months in the State. 
• UJALA will not only help reduce consumers their electricity bills but also contribute to the energy security of India. 
• The usage of LED bulbs will not only result in reducing electricity bills but also help in environment protection.
• The distribution of LED bulbs will happen through DISCOM offices.
• Consumers can buy these affordable LEDs by presenting any identity card. These bulbs come with a three year free replacement warranty .
• The UJALA scheme played a significant role in creating awareness about energy efficient lighting. 
• The number of LED bulbs distributed in 2015-16 has crossed 15 crore
• For 2016, the Union Government is set to distribute an additional 20 crore LED bulbs.
• Sustained efforts under UJALA, coupled with industry support, will help the government achieve its objective of replacing 77 crore inefficient bulbs by March 2019.
• UJALA is the largest non-subsidised LED programme in the world.

Maharashtra contributed Rs. 2,77,720.11 crore, of the total Rs. 6,95,788.85 crore in income tax collections, in financial year 2014-15.  
•    This detail was released by the country's income tax department for the first time on 29th April 2016.
•    There are 10 categories of income tax in India – individuals, corporates, trusts, local authorities, government, partnership firms, Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), body of individuals, association of persons and artificial juridical person.
•    The number of individual tax payers has decreased by 3.70 lakh between financial years 2012-13 and 2013-14. 
•    In 2013-14, 4.87 crore individuals paid taxes, which was 4.90 crore in the previous year. 
•    In all, 7.14 lakh companies paid corporate tax in financial year 2013-14, a bit more than 7.03 lakh companies in the previous year
•    Overall, the number of income tax payees declined to 5.17 crore in financial year 2013-14 from 5.21 crore in the previous financial year.

On April 29 Nagaland’s capital Kohima was declared ‘smoke-free’.
•    Announcement has been done by the Deputy Commissioner Rovilato Mor.
•    A campaign was initiated by the students of 22 educational institutes, to raise awareness about the harmful effects of smoking. 
•    It was organized by the District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) and Department of Health and Family Welfare.
•    As part of the campaign, the students held placards, some of which read “tobacco kills us”, “Smoking is Paying Someone to Kill You” and “Say No to Tobacco and Yes to Life”.  
•    They also shouted slogans “Make Kohima, Smoke Free City” and “Breathe Healthy, Live Happy”.
•    Chandigarh was declared the first smoke-free city in 2007. 
•    Kottayam in Kerala and Shimla also came into this list. 
•    In 2010, Sikkim was declared the first smoke-free state in India, and in 2014 Himachal Pradesh became the second.

Due to the Patel quota agitation, the BJP government in Gujarat on 29th April 2016 announced a 10 percent reservation.
•    This reservation is for the economically backward among upper castes, which include Patidars, with a family income cap of Rs 6 lakh a year to avail the benefit.
•    Reservation is a form of quota-based affirmative action. 
•    Reservation is governed by constitutional laws, statutory laws, and local rules and regulations. 
•    Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC), and in some states Backward Classes among Muslims under a category called BC(M), are the primary beneficiaries of the reservation policies under the Constitution.
•    Starting of July 2015, the people of India's Patidar community, seeking Other Backward Class (OBC) status, held public demonstrations across the Indian state of Gujarat.
•    The largest demonstration was held in Ahmedabad on 25 August and was attended by thousands. 
•    Later, there were incidents of violence and arson across the state resulting in curfew in several cities and towns.

On 17 March 2016 Goa classified the country liquor, Feni as Heritage Spirit of Goa.  Feni is the form of spirit produced exclusively in the coastal state.
•    Feni is the first liquor product in India to receive such status.
•    Feni is classified as a "country liquor", and is therefore not allowed to be sold outside the state of Goa
•    The word feni is derived from the Sanskrit word phena. This is because of the bubbles that form a light froth when the liquor is shaken in a bottle or poured into a glass.
•    The feni selling market is largely unorganised. Locals tend to buy feni directly from the thousands of traditional distillers who run seasonal mini-distilleries or stalls in the villages of Goa. 
•    Cashew feni was awarded Geographical Indication registration in 2009 as a speciality alcoholic beverage from Goa, described as a colourless, clear liquid that when matured in wooden barrels develops golden brown tint.
•    A large volume of feni that is distilled is sold directly by distillers to taverns who have business relationships that extend over generations.
•    Feni, is a brew made from coconut or cashew, is synonymous with the Goan ethos and identity.
•    The Goa Cashew Feni Distillers and Bottlers Association has hailed the move.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh launched in Shillong, capital of Meghalaya, today, the first of its kind, weeklong Cancer Care campaign in Northeast under the auspices of “North Eastern Council (NEC) - Pink Chain Cancer Conclave 2016”. 
•    The campaign is being attended by Cancer specialists from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and other parts of the country, and the weeklong programmes will include public education camps, academic discussions by medical experts and visits to educational institutions. 
•    The entire expenditure for this will be borne by the Ministry of DoNER and Adyar Cancer Institute, he said. 
•    Barooah Cancer Institute in Guwahati will shortly start super speciality DM Medical Oncology and MCh Surgical Oncology courses in Cancer, in collaboration with the Tata Memorial Institute, Mumbai and Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.
