Urjit Patel assumes charge as 24th RBI Governor
Urjit R Patel on 4 September 2016 assumed charge as the 24th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
• The handover ceremony will take place on 6 September 2016.
• Patel had been serving as the Deputy Governor since January 2013.
• Patel succeeds Raghuram Rajan, who after serving a three-year term, is going back to academia.
• On 20 August 2016, the appointment committee of cabinet approved the appointment of Patel for three years.
• Urjit Patel headed a panel that recommended landmark changes to monetary policy in India. The changes included a switch to inflation-targeting and the creation of a panel to set interest rates.
• In January 2016, he was reappointed as the Deputy Governor in Charge of monetary policy, the department he headed from 2013.
• Earlier between 1990 and 1995, he had worked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) covering US, India, Bahamas and Myanmar.
• He carries a doctorate from Yale University.
• He also carries M Phil from Oxford.

• पद हस्तांतरण कार्यक्रम 6 सितंबर 2016 को आयोजित किया जायेगा.
• पटेल जनवरी 2013 से डिप्टी गवर्नर पद पर कार्यरत थे.
• पटेल ने रघुराम राजन का स्थान लिया है जो इस पद पर पिछले तीन वर्ष से आसीन थे.
• केन्द्रीय नियुक्ति समिति ने 20 अगस्त 2016 पटेल को अगले तीन वर्ष के लिए नियुक्त करने हेतु मंजूरी प्रदान की.
• उर्जित पटेल ने एक मौद्रिक नीति में परिवर्तन की सिफारिश हेतु बनाई गयी समिति की अध्यक्षता की थी.
• यह सिफारिश आगे चलकर मील का पत्थर साबित हुई. परिवर्तन में मुद्रास्फीति लक्ष्य-निर्धारण के लिए ब्याज दरें निर्धारित करने हेतु परिवर्तन शामिल था.
• जनवरी 2016 में उन्हें पुनः मौद्रिक नीति के लिए डिप्टी गवर्नर बनाया गया.
• इससे पहले 1990 एवं 1995 में वे अंतरराष्ट्रीय मुद्रा कोष (आईएमएफ) के साथ भी काम कर चुके हैं, वे अमेरिका, भारत, बहामास एवं म्यांमार को कवर कर रहे थे.
• उन्होंने येल यूनिवर्सिटी से मानद उपाधि हासिल की.
• उन्होंने ऑक्सफ़ोर्ड यूनिवर्सिटी से एम.फिल डिग्री प्राप्त की.
