In the last paragraph, the Indian context is given to prove that despite the thriving economy of its, many people still exist below the poverty, not to forget the mentioning of the Europe and US for being advanced economy and still not mitigating the Poverty.

Question:

DIRECTIONS: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions.

Poverty has its own meaning in different persons. Poverty the state of being poor is a relative term. Poverty is always and every-where a social phenomenon in which a section of the society is unable to fulfill even its basic necessities of life. When a substantial segment of the society is deprived of minimum level of living and continues at a bare subsistence level that society is said to be plagued with mass poverty. The countries of the Third World exhibit invariably the existence of mass poverty, although pockets of poverty exist even in the developed countries of Europe and America.

It is a matter of great disappointment for India’s economic planning that even after more than 60 years since Independence, India still suffers from the problem of mass poverty. Poverty is affecting our mind, affecting our state, our country and the world. Although there was the Global Economic Crisis, India was not as affected by it as was the USA and other European countries. This is because of the paradoxical situation of the Indian economy. It is ridden by extreme poverty on one side while it also has a thriving and growing economy on the other.

Poverty _______ on the state of the economy.
Options:
A) is a burden
B) depends
C) borders
D) does not depend
Solution:
Answer: Option (d)

The description in the beginning of the passage gives us the idea that the subject of Poverty is not dependent, but a relative term , own meaning in different persons. Also, the 3rd and the 4th lines of the passage explain a section of the society being given such a description only due their inability to earn a basic living.

Dear Student,

According to the passage, the second last line clearly states that, 'This is because of the paradoxical situation of the Indian economy'. The statement means that each of the states, of poverty and the economy are related and depend a lot on each other.
The meaning of the other sentence referred by you, as quoted 'Although there was the Global Economic Crisis, India was not as affected by it as was the USA and other European countries' means that India was not affected by the Global Economic crisis as much as the countries like the US and Europe.
Hope both the sentence and the question have been clarified.
