Question:
Two pipes A and B can fill a cistern in 30 minutes and 40 minutes respectively. Both the pipes are turned on simultaneously. When should the second pipe be closed, if the cistern is to be filled in 24 minutes?
Options:
A) 6 min
B) 8 min
C) 10 min
D) 12 min
Solution:
Ans: (b) Pipe A can fill \(\cfrac{1}{30}\) of the cistern in one minute

Pipe B can fill \(\cfrac{1}{40}\) of the cistern in one minute

Pipe A and pipe B together can fill \(\cfrac{1}{30}+\cfrac{1}{40}=\cfrac{7}{120}\)

of the cistern in one minute

\(\therefore\) In k minutes, pipe A and pipe B can fill \(\cfrac{7k}{120}\) of the cistern

\(\therefore\cfrac{120-7k}{4}+k=24\Rightarrow k=8\)
