Question:

Four years ago, the ratio of A’s age to B’s age was 11: 14 and four years later their ages will be in the ratio 13 : 16. The present age of A is:

Options:
A)

48 years

B)

26 years

C)

44 years

D)

28 years

Solution:

Let us assume the ages of A & B, 4 years ago, be 11x years and 14x years respectively.

 Present ages of A & B will be (11x + 4) years and (14x + 4) years respectively

∴ 4 years later,

Age of A will be

= 11x + 4 + 4 = (11x + 8) years

and age of B will be

= 14x + 4 + 4 = (14x + 8) years

Now According to question,

\(\cfrac{11x+8}{14x+8}=\cfrac{13}{16}\)

 (11x + 8) × 16 = (14x + 8) × 13

 176x + 128 = 182x+ 104

⇒ 128 – 104 = 182x – 176x

⇒ 24 = 6x

⇒ x = 4

Present age of A= (11x + 4) years

= (11 × 4 + 4) years

= (44 + 4) years

= 48 years.
