Question:
In a 150 m race, Anwar gave Bala a start of 15 m and was beaten by Bala by 45 m or 15 seconds. Find Bala’s speed (in m/sec).
Options:
A) \(\cfrac{26}{7}\)
B) \(\cfrac{24}{7}\)
C) \(\cfrac{25}{7}\)
D) \(\cfrac{27}{7}\)
Solution:

Ans (d) Anwar was beaten by Bala by 45 m Anwar was 45 m behind Bala when Bala finished the race …. (1)

Anwar was beaten by Bala by 15 seconds Anwar reached the finishing point-is seconds after Bala reached it …. (2)

(1) and (2) Anwar took 15 seconds to run the last 45 m of the race

∴ His speed = \(\cfrac{45}{15}\) m/sec = 3 m/sec

When Bala finished the race, he must have run 150 m – 15 m = 135 m. Anwar must have run (150 -  45)m = 105 m in the time Bala ran 135 m.

Ratio of the speeds of Bala and Anwar = \(\cfrac{135}{105}\) = \(\cfrac{9}{7}\)

Bala’s speed = 9/7 (3) m/sec = \(\cfrac{27}{7}\) m/sec
