Explain by easier method how much tank was filled by the in-tap

Question:

There is a leak in the bottom of the tank. This leak can empty a full tank in 8 hours. When the tank is full, a tap is opened into the tank which admits 10 liters per hour into the same tank and the tank is then emptied in 12 hours. What is the capacity of the tank?

Options:
A)

280 liters

B)

250 liters

C)

240 liters

D)

200 liters

Solution:

Ans: (c)

Part of the tank emptied by the leak in 1 hr = \(\cfrac{1}{8}\)

Let part of the tank filled by the tap in 1 hr = x

Part of the tank emptied by the leak and tap together = \(\cfrac{1}{12}\)

According to the question,

\(\cfrac{1}{8}\)-x=\(\cfrac{1}{12}\)

x=\(\cfrac{1}{24}\)

Part of the tank filled by the tap in 1 hr =  \(\cfrac{1}{24}\)

Pipe can be filled by the tap in 24 hrs

Capacity of the tank 24 × 10 = 240 litre
