first , 780 is given in second condition and not 840. Second, a% is given and x is written nowhere.

Question:

shopkeeper charges sales tax of a% up to Rs. 3000 and above if he charges y%. A customer pays total tax of Rs. 480, when he purchases the goods worth Rs. 8000 and he pays the total of Rs. 840 for the goods worth Rs. 14000. The value of (x + y)  is:

Options:
A)

 10%

B)

 12%

C)

 11%

D)

 None of these

Solution:

3000×x100+5000×y100=480   ………….(i)

3000×x100+11000×y100=840   .…………..(ii)

On solving 60y = 360

y = 6%

3000×x100    = 480 – 300

x = 6%

x + y = (6 + 6) = 12%
