The biggest news of this year, which was announced by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on 22nd March 2022, Monday is that all the central universities that are funded by it, which include the Delhi University (DU), IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University), Jamia Milia are all now going to have a new common university entrance test or the CUET as it’s been called. 

This common university entrance test (CUET) is conducted for the admission of the students into the undergraduate programs offered by the universities which come under the central government of India or, we can say, the universities which are funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC).  

Recently in an interview, the chairperson, professor Jagdish Kumar said that from a student’s perspective, the introduction of CUET would be a great relief for students across the country. It would cut - off system history and give students a level playing field.

This Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). This entrance test will be compulsory for all central universities. State universities and Private universities are also asked to consider these entrance test scores for admission to their undergraduate programs. This test will now be compulsory, so this is the latest development that will happen.                                                                                                      

This entrance test is very good from the student's perspective because students have to write many exams earlier to get admission to different universities. But now, there will be just one entrance test for all the universities.

⇒ The basic eligibility to apply for the CUET test is that any student who has passed their 10 + 2 standards can write the CUET. ⇒ The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is scheduled to take place in the first week of July 2022.

⇒ The application process for writing the CUET will be initiated by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in the first week of April 2022.

⇒ The application process will be available online mode only.

⇒ The CUET examination will be a computer-based test, and it will be conducted in online mode only. The students do not have to have high proficiency in using the computers; just a basic knowledge of computers is enough to write the CUET examination.

⇒ This examination is going to be conducted in 2 parts. Both the parts will be computer-based tests. 

⇒ The CUET examination will be conducted for the 42 central universities of India.

⇒ The CUET examination consists of 3 sections, i.e., Section A is a Language test, Section B is a Domain-specific test, and Section C is a General Aptitude test.

⇒ Section A consists of a language test. It is a compulsory test for all aspirants, and a student will have to take the exam in any one of the 13 languages which have been offered by the NTA. The 13 languages from which the student has to choose are English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

⇒ Section B consists of a domain-specific test. In this test, candidates have to choose from 27 subjects, of which a candidate is allowed to take a maximum of 6 domain subjects that he or she desires to pursue at their undergraduate level. 

⇒ Section C is divided into two subsections - the General test and the Language test. Subsection 1 will be a general aptitude test, and Subsection 2  will be a language test.

NTA CUET Exam Pattern 2023

⇒ The CUET examination consists of 3 sections, i.e., Section A is a Language test, Section B is a Domain-specific test, and Section C is a General Aptitude test.

⇒ Section A consists of a language test. It is a compulsory test for all aspirants, and a student will have to take the exam in any one of the 13 languages which have been offered by the NTA. The 13 languages from which the student has to choose are English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

⇒ Section B consists of a domain-specific test. In this test, candidates have to choose from 27 subjects, of which a candidate is allowed to take a maximum of 6 domain subjects that he or she desires to pursue at their undergraduate level. 

⇒ The subjects include Accountancy, Biology, Computer Science, Business Studies, Economics, Legal studies, Home Science, Entrepreneurship, Physics, Chemistry, C++, Engineering Drawing, Physical Education, Sociology, Psychology, History, Geography, Political Science, Fine arts, Performing arts, and etc.

⇒ ‘Section A’ is compulsory for all the candidates. He/She has to opt for one paper. In section B, a candidate can take the test for the course he/she desires to pursue at the undergraduate level. A candidate can appear for as many as six domain tests. Also, some universities/ higher education institutions may offer courses for which a candidate need not have studied the subjects in school.

⇒ Section C is divided into two subsections - the General test and the Language test. Subsection 1 will be a general aptitude test, and Subsection 2  will be a language test. This section is an optional section. 

⇒ Subsection 2 is a language test. In this test, there will be 19 languages from which candidates have to choose one; from that language, questions will be asked. The languages are Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Nepali, Persian, Russian, Spanish, Tibetan, Bodo, Dogri, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithali, Manipuri, Santhali, and Sindhi.

⇒ Section C is an optional section as many university programs will require only general aptitude scores. For example - Banaras Hindu University, for some of its programs, will offer admission based on the general test.

⇒ The CUET examination is divided into 3 sections, i.e., Section A - Language test, Section B - Domain-specific test, and section C - general aptitude test.

⇒ For the CUET examination, candidates must study from their class 11th and class 12th books because the syllabus and level of the questions are the same as those of your class 11th and class 12th.

Syllabus of Section A (Language Test) 

The questions in this section will test one’s proficiency in the language based on comprehension passages, fundamentals of grammar, and vocabulary. In the Comprehension section, candidates will be evaluated on their understanding of a passage and its central theme, meanings of words used therein, etc. The Grammar section entails correcting grammatically incorrect sentences, filling blanks in sentences with appropriate words, etc. Questions on synonyms & antonyms will check one’s command of English vocabulary.
